The Center for Teaching & Learning Excellence provides Instructor Evaluations and Consultations on an individual basis. We offer consultations before, during, and after each semester. We offer evaluations of teaching throughout the semester.
Instructors benefit from individual consultations regarding their syllabus, lesson plans, rubrics, or other class materials. Additionally, Instructors can request CTLE’s in-class, online mid-term, and/or video coaching evaluations to obtain feedback that is very rewarding and valuable for their individual teaching strategies and goals.
To request an evaluation:
With our new evaluation registration system, you can have your course set up for an evaluation in a few minutes or less.
Simply go to: http://registration.ctle.utah.edu and submit the request form.
Evaluation Opportunites
CTLE evaluations are confidential. You can find the CTLE Confidentiality Agreement here.

In Class Evaluations Submit a Request
In Class Classroom Observations: A member of CTLE attends an entire class period, taking comprehensive notes and conducting an extensive evaluation of teacher and student behavior. The instructor then consults with the CTLE expert in order to receive suggestions and resources.
In Class Video Coaching: CTLE will videotape the instructor’s class and give the instructor a guided self-evaluation worksheet. The instructor watches the videotape and fills out the evaluation and then consults with a member of CTLE to get answers to questions about course improvement.
In Class Small Group SGID (Small Group Instructional Diagnosis): A member of CTLE comes to the last 20 minutes of one of the instructor’s classes, preferably after the first major test/project score has been returned to the students. We ask basic questions about what is working in the classroom and what can be improved. Students get into small groups and fill out a worksheet first and then we have a brief class discussion. This provides us with the “group norm”. We then hold a consultation with the instructor regarding the class.

Online Midterm Evaluations Submit a Request
Online midterm evaluations are designed to give you personal feedback from your students that can be used to improve your course before the end-of-term evaluation which can often end up in your teaching portfolio and/or files for Retention, Promotion and Tenure purposes.
Online Midterm Simple: Students respond to questions online. The simple evaluation asks what is going well and what can be improved (qualitative data). The instructor can also let us know if there are any other questions s/he would like us to ask.
Online Midterm End of Term Replica: Students respond to questions online. The end of term replica mimics the end of term evaluation, collecting both numerical and open-text data.
We suggest that Online Midterm Evaluations start after the first major assignment or test has been graded and returned to the students and that it remain available for 7 days. Then we either meet with the instructor or send the instructor the results and recommend additional resources, when advisable.

Syllabus and Materials Review: A CTLE consultant reviews the course syllabus and appropriate materials such as texts, tests, PowerPoint presentations, handouts, project explanations, grading rubrics, worksheets, etc., specifically focusing on objectives, levels of thinking skills, and clarity. We then hold a consultation with the instructor to give suggestions on how to effectively improve the course curriculum.
Four-Step Consultation Plan: This is our most extensive evaluation package. If needs be, an instructor can pick and choose which parts of the package s/he would prefer:
We have an initial consultation with the instructor in order to understand his/her needs and to gather any class materials that might help us to understand the course.
We perform classroom evaluations of two sorts: first, we either sit in on a class or videotape a class to get an idea of the teacher-student interactions, then we conduct a midterm student feedback session where a member of CTLE comes to the last 20 minutes of one class and asks the students what is working/ not working for them.
We hold another consultation with the instructor to explain the students’ feedback and our observations and we give any suggestions for improvement (along with resources to help the instructor in the process).
We follow up on the instructor’s progress later in the semester.
